ELECTRICAL GUIDE · UPDATED 2026-11-01
Planning a home rewire
Establish what needs replacing, agree a room-by-room brief and budget for disruption and finishing work.
Base the decision on condition
A property's age alone does not establish that a complete rewire is needed. Ask a competent electrician to explain the inspection findings, alternatives and which parts can safely remain. Obtain a written scope distinguishing a full rewire from a partial replacement.
- Share previous alterations, recurring faults and existing reports.
- Agree responsibility for assessing hidden defects and suspected asbestos before disturbance; do not lift or open electrical fittings to inspect them yourself.
Make a practical room plan
List how each room will be used, furniture positions and likely future loads. Discuss sockets, lighting controls, smoke alarms, networking and possible EV or solar projects so the contractor can design a suitable installation.
- Agree access beneath floors and into lofts, dust control, security and waste removal.
- Check whether plastering, decoration and moving furniture are included.
- Ask whether you can remain at home and how any temporary supply, overnight power and essential equipment will be managed safely by the contractor.
Control changes and completion
Compare quotes against the same brief, including testing and the agreed Building Regulations route. Record variations and prices before extra work proceeds. Arrange a final walkthrough, circuit information, installation certification and applicable compliance documents; keep them for future maintenance and any property sale.
