Planning an electric vehicle charger
Check parking permissions, your supply, charging needs and the full installation scope before choosing a home charger.
Start with parking and daily use
Tell the installer your vehicle, usual mileage, parking position and charging window. A higher advertised charger rating does not mean your vehicle or supply can use that rate. Compare a practical charging plan rather than buying on headline speed.
- Check landlord, freeholder or shared-parking permissions before ordering.
- Where a cable would cross a public pavement, ask the council about an approved arrangement; do not assume permission or create a trip hazard.
- Discuss cable reach, accessible controls, connectivity and any ongoing app or subscription costs.
Have the installation assessed
Choose an installer with relevant EV competence. They should assess existing electrics, supply capacity, protection and the need to coordinate with your distribution network operator. Agree whether prior approval or notification is required and who handles it; do not alter supply equipment yourself.
- Include other major loads and any planned heat pump, solar or battery system in the discussion.
- Ask whether load management, groundwork, a long cable route or supply changes affect the price and timetable.
Price the complete service
Request an itemised survey-based quote, handover demonstration, electrical and applicable compliance documents, warranty and fault support. Confirm any grant eligibility with the current official scheme before committing; do not budget on an unconfirmed subsidy or a guaranteed saving.
