Checking electrical registers and qualifications

Check the exact business, person and work scope. A registration entry is useful evidence, not a guarantee for every electrical job.

Start with the business and the work

Ask who will attend, which business contracts for the work and who will inspect, test and issue the paperwork. Match the trading or registered name and business contact details to the register entry. Ask for current qualifications and experience relevant to your particular job. There is no single compulsory register covering every kind of electrical work.

Home installations: Registered Competent Person Electrical, NICEIC and NAPIT

GOV.UK directs householders to the Electrical Competent Person Register. NICEIC and NAPIT also provide their own business searches. Check the actual listed scheme and scope; registration for domestic installation work does not automatically establish competence for all inspection, industrial or renewable-energy tasks.

Competent person scheme registration is one route for self-certifying relevant building-regulations work. Ask the contractor which notification or building-control route applies and what paperwork is included.

Landlord reports need inspection and testing competence

For an EICR, ask specifically about competence and experience in inspection and testing of the type of installation involved. Relevant scheme listings can help; installation membership alone does not answer every inspection question. Agree the report scope, limitations and arrangements for any remedial quotation.

Solar, batteries and individual ECS cards

For solar PV or battery storage, use the MCS installer search where MCS certification is relevant to the project, and check each technology separately. A solar entry is not automatically a battery-storage entry. Manufacturer training is another distinct item to check.

ECS Check can verify an individual electrotechnical card. Ask the attending person to show the relevant card and use the official checking route. Do not publish their personal card details or private qualification documents on a directory profile.

What Electrician Shortlist records

Where an exact business-register result has been independently matched, the profile may show the scheme, registered name, source link and date checked. Other claims remain identified as business-advertised or awaiting confirmation. A dated register observation does not confer our separate full verification status. Supporting identity, insurance and qualification evidence remains private.

For older or vulnerable customers, agree readable written information, clear charges, identification and any involvement of someone trusted. A technical register entry is not an elderly-care or safeguarding approval.
